Managing Custom Medications

Custom medications are items that are not found in the Medispan library. New Custom medications can be added to the Custom Medication Library. After adding to the library, custom medications can be edited or deleted.

Note

Before creating a custom medication, search the Medispan library thoroughly. Custom Medications are not checked for Drug Protocols and Warnings.

  1. Do one of the following:

    • Single community: Care Services > Setup > Custom Medication Library

    • Multi-community: Management Console > Standards > Care Management > Custom Medication Library

  • When creating custom medications at the Management Console Level, if a community is using Physician Orders, additional fields are available to be completed.

  • When adding or editing a custom medication, you must select a Controlled drug level of 0 through 6. Custom medications with a controlled drug level greater than "0" behave the same as controlled drugs entered from the Medispan Library. This ensures all orders for controlled drugs undergo the same checks in PointClickCare.

  • After review of your current Custom Medication Library, custom medication orders with a controlled drug level greater than "0" are flagged in the resident's chart and Orders Portal. You must update medications flagged with a red triangle. Updating discontinues the original order and creates a new order containing the Custom Medication. The new order behaves the same as controlled drugs entered from the Medispan Library.
