Interpreting the Corporate Average Length of Stay Dashboard

The Corporate Average Length of Stay Dashboard is similar in layout and purpose to the Corporate Rate Detail Dashboard. The only metric on the dashboard is the Average Length of Stay. All of the corporate rate metrics listed are true aggregates of the organization regardless of the user access controls for the facility level detail.

The Average Length of Stay is calculated only for those residents that were admitted from and discharged to an acute care facility. Average LOS = date of discharge (or today if no discharge has occurred) - date of admission.

  • Period  - Annual or Monthly and represents the time frequency for which the measure is calculated.

  • Month and Year - Define the span of time represented in the dashboard.

  • Comparable Value - Select variables for comparison. Only one can be selected at a time.

  • Facility - Select facilities. Click Apply to set filter.

Dashboard Header - At the top of the dashboard is the Average Length of Stay rate along with the numerator and denominator values which are used to calculate the rate.

Trend Chart  - The trend chart shows at least a 2 year trend, but adjusts depending on the period selected. The trend chart also works in conjunction with a selection option available called Compare Variable.

Selecting the Compare Variable allows for a different representations of the trend chart itself to view the impact of different factors and or variables on the measure at hand. Compare Variable options available are:

  • All-in-One Facilities – this is the default view and offers the aggregated trend for the corporate level and includes all facilities.

  • Age Group

  • Gender

  • Payer Type

Rate by Length of Stay Days calculator - This section is a dynamic section that is used to input different lengths of stay time spans and drill deeper into how the average length of stay differs by the length of stay ranges. This section allows you to view readmissions based on length of stay.

In the Rate by Length of Stay Days calculator, the ranges for the length of stay are user defined. The ranges can be modified by changing the value in the Group Stay Days in Ranges of box. The Metric Days selection option defines the upper limit, and is adjustable by changing the value in the Group Everything Above box. As the ranges are adjusted, the metric rates adjust as well.

Facility Comparison with Contribution Rate - This section shows the top 15 facilities within the organization for the selected measure. The chart shows a row per facility and shows the facilities rate for the selected measure. This is represented by the blue bar. In addition, next to the facility rate, a contribution rate appears. The contribution rate measures the contribution impact that the facility has on the overall aggregated corporate rate. The contribution rates, which are the black vertical lines, in essence account for details such as size of facility and not simply the facility rate itself.

The Facility Comparison with Contribution Rate chart can also be adjusted to show facilities of interest by selecting them from the Facility filter.

Note

Facilities that are available for viewing in The Facility Comparison with Contribution Rate chart are controlled by user security access.
