Creating Complex Alerts

Complex Alerts let you generate alerts based on a trend. For example, you may want your staff alerted when a resident has refused more than 3 meals in a 72 hour time period. If the resident refuses one meal, an alert is not be required. If it occurs multiple times within a specified period, the nurses want to be alerted so they can investigate further.

Complex Alert calculations trigger alerts based on a select number of documented occurrences, for a specific follow up question, over a selected time frame.

Alerts CANNOT be triggered based on numeric responses to questions, for example. Fluid Intake/Output.

  1. Views: click Complex Alerts.

  2. Enter Alert Name. For example. "Resident not eating".

  3. Enter Alert Description e.g. "Resident did not eat 3 meals in a 72 hour time period" - this is how the Alert appears on the Dashboard.

  4. Select Module for alert to appear in Clinical and/or Admin.

  5. Enter Order Number if needed.

  6. Click magnifying glass icon to select which follow up question's responses trigger this alert.

  7. In the Follow Up Question Search window, scroll or search to find the FUQ to find appropriate question, for example, "meal".

  8. Select the question you need, for example. "What percentage of the meal was eaten?"

  9. Select the appropriate response(s).

  10. Click and complete the appropriate statement for ‘For each resident generate an alert if’, e.g. Staff document only these response(s) within 72 Hours.

  • For the selections ‘For each resident generate an alert if…’ (the ‘if/then’ statement), the simplest one to select is the last one in the list: ‘Staff Document only these responses XX hours or days.

  • Be aware, even if ‘Days’ is selected for these statements, the system converts ‘Days’ into hours. For example, if you select ‘Staff document only these responses – 3 DAYS, the system counts the first applicable response and then calculates these responses for 72 hours from the first relevant documentation occurrence – NOT calendar days.

  • If the list for Hours is selected for any of the if/then statements, the system does not calculate in SHIFTS – for example, if ‘8 Hours’ is selected, the relevant responses to the FUQ counts on any revolving 8 hour time frame – NOT the shift the first relevant response was documented in.
