Pharmacy Orders that must be Faxed to Pharmacy Quick Reference Guide

This quick reference guide provides basic information regarding orders that must be faxed to your local Pharmacy provider.

Remember the acronym CHAIC 

C

Compound Orders

  • A combination of 2 or more drugs.

  • Prepared by a pharmacist.

  • For a patient's individual needs.

H

House Stock

  • Medications the facility provides (usually in bulk vs. being labeled for each resident).

A

Any order with directions over 140 characters

  • NCPDP guidelines require orders with directions over 140 characters to be faxed to the pharmacy.

I

Intravenous Orders

  • These orders are not transmitted based on the route of administration.

C

Controlled drugs Orders

  • New Orders for Controlled drugs (CII, CIII, CIV and CV). If you update a controlled drug order, you must re-fax it.
