Overview of Submissions 

After an MDS assessment is completed and locked, it can be batched alone or with other completed/locked MDS within the same quarter or month (for Alberta facilities). The batch is created from the MDS Portal, Batches view. From a Batch, a file can be generated and saved to an area on your computer where you can retrieve the file for submission. Files are submitted to the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) or your local Health Authority/Provincial submitting body. The files are generated either as an.XML (ending in .zip) or .TXT that need to be zipped. This file type depends on the province you are in and who you are submitting your MDS assessments to.

The Contact Information file is also generated from the MDS Portal, Batches view. This is submitted to CIHI or the Health Authority/Provincial submitting body. Some provinces (e.g. Alberta) may not be required to submit the Contact Information file or even have the option to create it.
